Award Description
This award commemorates the legacy of Mario Alberto Castañeda Peña by honoring individuals, institutions, or multi-stakeholder initiatives that have demonstrated sustained, visionary leadership in advancing global collaboration within the field of Clinical Engineering and Health Technology Management (HTM). The award seeks to recognize meaningful international cooperation that has improved healthcare delivery, strengthened technical capacity, and advanced professional standards across borders.  Mario Castañeda was a pioneer in Clinical Engineering, remembered not only for his technical contributions but for his tireless commitment to mentorship, cross-cultural collaboration, and the professional development of others. This award, sponsored by the Andhra Pradesh MedTech Zone (AMTZ), India’s premier medical technology park, celebrates those whose work exemplifies the same values of service, education, and global connection that defined Mario’s legacy.

Criteria: Nominees must demonstrate significant international contributions aligned with the following three categories:
 
  1. Global Collaborative Impact
  • Forged enduring partnerships across countries or regions that resulted in improved access to health technologies, professional standards, or service delivery.
  • Engaged with diverse stakeholders including government agencies, academic institutions, manufacturers, NGOs, and multilateral organizations (e.g., WHO, IFMBE, IEEE, PAHO).
  • Facilitated knowledge exchange, mutual learning, or shared infrastructure benefiting low-resource or underserved populations.
  1. Innovation in International Practice
  • Introduced or supported innovative practices, tools, training programs, or regulatory models that addressed pressing global challenges in Clinical Engineering or HTM.
  • Advanced interoperability, safety, or service delivery models across borders through shared development and testing of technologies or processes.
  • Integrated digital tools, education, and data systems to enhance global cooperation or health technology equity.
  1. Leadership, Mentorship, and Legacy
  • Demonstrated personal commitment to nurturing the next generation of clinical engineers through international mentorship or educational collaboration.
  • Represented the Clinical Engineering profession in global policy or standardization efforts with tangible outcomes.
  • Inspired others through leadership rooted in ethical practice, humility, and service to the profession and global community.
Eligibility
Individuals, professional organizations, academic programs, public-private partnerships, or consortia operating within or across national borders in the field of Clinical Engineering and HTM.

Nomination Requirements
  • Completed nomination form with contact details
  • Candidate's curriculum vitae or organizational profile
  • Short biography or summary of key activities (1–2 pages)
  • Evidence of impact (e.g., publications, testimonials, outcome data, media, etc.)
  • Two letters of recommendation supporting the nomination
Frequency
Annually; presented at the International Clinical Engineering & Health Technology Management Congress (ICEHTMC) or during the Global Clinical Engineering Day celebrations.

Award
Plaque, official recognition on the GCEA website, and full registration fee waiver for the recipient (or representative) to attend the ICEHTMC. Additional travel or presentation support may be provided by AMTZ or other sponsors.
 
Event and Presentation
The award will be presented during a special recognition segment at ICEHTMC or GCEA’s global events. When possible, a commemorative keynote or session reflecting on Mario Castañeda’s legacy will accompany the presentation. Highlights will be shared via GCEA’s website, journal, and newsletters.
